How lonely do you have to be,
Before they see your pain,
How broken do you have to be,
Before the soaking rain,
Does fill the emptiness within,
Where demons fear to tread,
How lonely do you have to be,
To lose that fear and dread.
How lonely do you have to be,
Before they hear your cry,
How damaged do you have to be,
To feel you want to die,
Emotions a reminder,
Of the devastating hole,
How lonely do you have to be,
To save your wretched soul.
How lonely do you have to be,
Before you find escape,
How absent do you have to be,
To lose the shroud you drape,
When splinters in the dead of night,
Cut wounds that never heal
How lonely do you have to be,
To know that it’s for real.

This poem is the tenth in a series of prose which are conversations with my inner child parts. This is a homework assignment from J.B. my clinical psychologist. It is hoped by engaging with these individual child parts it will validate their existence and help bring me closer to understanding my own trauma and pain and thus move closer to healing from it.
