Hello Pop

Hello Pop, it’s been awhile,
You’re ninety-three today,
The years have passed,
And still I feel,
I led your heart astray,
I’ve done my best,
To keep afloat,
To be a soul of note,
But I’m afraid,
My choices left me,
Stranded in the boat.

Without a light to guide me,
Or an anchor holding firm,
I’m left adrift,
To sail this world,
Still lessons, yet to learn,
My compass,
Pointing sideways,
In a never ending twitch,
I go to ground,
But still I find,
I’m stuck within a ditch.

I know you know the perils,
And the dark this house beholds,
Bereft of love,
It drips contempt,
Within its perfect folds,
I take the punches,
As they come,
My heart it bleeds for hope,
But still I feel,
All black and blue,
And tangled on the rope.

And too I wonder if you see,
The depths of which I fall,
It’s hard to keep your balance,
When,
Your flights of fancy stall,
I ruminate on moments,
When I could have,
Made my way,
Instead,
I lay here solemn,
As she has the final say.

Hello Pop, it’s been awhile,
You’re ninety-three today,
The years have passed,
But still I feel,
I led your heart astray,
I never said,
I love you,
But I meant it,
Through my tears,
As long as you forgive me,
I can face these coming years.
